1. In the apparatus illustrated below, a student adds a known quantity of magnesium ribbon to an excess of 100 cm3 of dilute hydrochloric acid. This creates an excess. Hydrogen gas is evolved. A time measurement is done to determine how long it takes to collect 48 cm3 of gas at room temperature and pressure.

(a) I Name apparatus A.

(ii) Name apparatus B.

(a) Determine how many moles of hydrogen are contained in the 48 cm3 of gas using the following formula:

At standard conditions (room temperature and pressure), one mole of any gas takes up a volume of 24,000 cm3.

(ii) Using the equation below, determine the amount of magnesium that was used in the experiment to generate 48 cm3 of hydrogen at the same temperature and pressure as the starting point. [Ar : Mg, 24]

(c) Conduct an experiment to determine whether or not hydrogen gas is present.

(d) What kind of an impact does it have on the amount of time it takes to gather the same volume of gas if,

2. (a) Using graphite electrodes and the equipment described below, a student conducts research on the electrolysis of aqueous copper(II) sulfate.

(v) The electrolysis of the solution does not result in any noticeable change in color if the graphite electrodes are switched out for copper electrodes. Give your reasoning.

(b) Using the apparatus described in (a), the student conducts additional experiments using graphite electrodes.
