The goal of Study in Canada Scholarships is to expand the opportunity for Canadian post-secondary institutions to accept short-term exchanges of international students from a variety of nations and territories for study or research.

In keeping with the goals of Canada's International Education Strategy, successful Canadian post-secondary institutions will have the chance to strengthen and diversify their international connections as well as to advertise their academic and research excellence in the new markets.

The program's new links will expand and enhance Canada's educational engagement with a wide range of partners, boost bilateral ties, and support the Canadian government's larger aim to diversify its international trade.

Canada Study Scholarships

  • Competition is over for the academic year 2022–2023.
  • Who may apply: Post-secondary institutions in Canada
NOTICE: No other institutions outside of Canada may submit applications on behalf of applicants. They could decide to set their own internal timetable for receiving the necessary paperwork.

The Study in Canada Scholarships offer short-term exchange opportunities for study or research at the college, undergraduate, and graduate levels in Canadian post-secondary institutions to students from post-secondary institutions located in the new eligible countries/territories.

The full-degree-based Study in Canada Scholarships program, which was trialed in 2020, has been replaced by this student exchange program. The next competition will give at least 50 scholarships, with the total rising annually.

Postsecondary institutions in Canada

Canadian Institutions:
  • Application forms on behalf of qualified candidates;

  • encourage the chosen applicants to advance their language and intercultural competence before leaving.

Successful candidates.

Recipients of scholarships consent to:
  • Full-time study or research in accordance with the Canadian institution's definition;
  • between August 1, 2022, and no later than February 1, 2023, to accept their prize in Canada. The scholarship could be revoked if you don't show up by this time.
  • refuse to participate in clinical research or training that involves caring for patients directly;
  • throughout their stay in Canada, principally devote themselves to full-time studies or research; and
  • After the scholarship time, they finish their education at their native institutions.

Additional details.

  • The scholarship administrator will not give rejected applicants comments;
  • Scholarships are non-renewable and cannot be delayed;
  • Scholarships are dependent on financing from the Canadian government;
  • Both the Canadian institution awarding the scholarship and the scholarship winner are exempt from taxes.


Value and Durations.

Global Affairs Canada, often known as the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Development, provides funding for study abroad scholarships (DFATD).

Scholarship value and duration

Scholarship amount and time frame
All successful applicants will receive financing from DFATD in the form of a contribution agreement from the Canadian institution, which will then be in charge of giving the money to scholarship beneficiaries.

The value of a scholarship varies according to the length and degree of study:
  • CAD 10,000 for university, college, or graduate (Master's and PhD) students for a minimum of four months or one academic term of study or research; or
  • CAD 12,700 for a period of five to six months of study or research for graduate students (Master's and PhD).
The Canadian host institutions will receive CAD 500 per scholarship recipient to help with administrative expenditures after the scholarship recipient arrives in Canada, in addition to the cash granted to the grantees by DFATD.

The additional employer compliance fees that Canadian institutions have paid to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada may be refunded in some circumstances.

Scholarships Eligible EXPENSES

Uses for scholarship money should include:
  • Fees for a visa or a work permit;
  • Airfare only on the shortest and least expensive route for the scholarship recipient;
  • health protection;
  • living costs, including those for housing, electricity, and food;
  • ground transportation, such as a pass for public transit; and
  • books and other materials needed for the recipient to do their research or study, barring computers and other technology.
According to its internal procedures, the Canadian institution will provide monies to scholarship recipients after receiving funding from DFATD in the form of a contribution agreement.

Canadian institutions are required to refund all money, including the administrative fee, to DFATD in the event that a recipient declines the scholarship.

Candidates should:
  • Citizens of one of the following nations or territories are eligible:
    • Asia: Taiwan, Bangladesh, and Nepal
    • Europe: Ukraine and Turkey
    • Middle East and North Africa: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, and 
    • Sub-Saharan Africa: Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, and Uganda are all countries.
  • Full-time enrollment in a post-secondary institution in a nation or territory that is qualified, as well as payment of tuition to that institution both at the time of application and throughout the exchange.

Candidate ineligibility

  • if they are Canadian citizens or permanent residents, or if an application for either is pending;
  • if they are currently a part of a scholarship program supported by the Canadian government; and
  • if they are already enrolled in a post-secondary degree, diploma, or certificate program in Canada.

Eligibility for postsecondary institutions in Canada

The post-secondary institution in Canada must:

  • An institution with designated learning status (DLI);
  • have a current student exchange agreement in place with the candidate's home university, which exempts scholarship recipients from paying tuition.
  • Without an agreement, letters from the international office of the Canadian school or its equivalent will be accepted for college and undergraduate research applications; and
  • Before submitting an application for a scholarship on the candidate's behalf, 
  • please notify the candidate and their home institution of any necessary fees that, absent extraordinary circumstances, cannot be waived.

Selection Criteria

Applications that are eligible and complete will be assessed using the following standards:
  • Merit of the proposed Canadian research or study;
  • benefit to peers and the home institution;
  • the institution in Canada, the supervisor, and the peers will all profit;
  • the strength of the connections that the proposed exchange will build; and
  • rankings supplied by the institution in Canada.
Note: Candidates who have not previously been awarded a scholarship through the Study in Canada Scholarships program will be given priority.

Applications for scholarships:

The Canadian institution submits each application on the candidates' behalf. Before starting the online application, Canadian universities are advised to thoroughly read the instructions. The International Scholarships Canada Application Tool Help webpage has more details.

Instructions for institutions in Canada

Institutions with issues completing or submitting the form should contact scholarships-bourses@cbie.ca by email.

Institutions in Canada must:
  • Fill out an online application for every applicant.
    • Institutions that don't already have an account must register one first.
    • The institution should choose the Study in Canada Scholarships program under "For Non-Canadians" and then click "Apply Now" after logging into their account.
    • Institutions have the option to save applications and finish them later. Applications that have been saved and submitted will both show up on the institution's profile page.
  • Follow the instructions for each item and provide information in the fields indicated as required.
    • The candidate's name must match what is listed on their passport.
    • The candidate's home institution's official name must be given in its native tongue.
  • Upload all necessary documents.
  • Check the information before submitting.
  • The institution will receive a confirmation message and reference number after you click SUBMIT, which submits the form.
  • Use the print feature of the browser to print the form for their records.

Supplementary records

  • The application cannot upload any files larger than 5 MB in size or in the.pdf,.jpg,.doc,.docx,.txt, or.gif formats.
  • Institutions are required to make sure that documents follow instructions and are accurate and full. After the deadline, revised documents will not be considered. 
  • Documents not written in English or French must be accompanied by a translation in that language.

Evidence of citizenship:

  • A copy of the applicant's passport or national identification card, both of which include a photo and current dates
  • Candidates from Taiwan must also present documentation of their Taiwanese household registration.
  • Driver's license, permanent resident card, work permit, student card, health card, birth certificate, or baptismal certificate are examples of documents that are not recognized as proof of citizenship.

  • A copy of the candidate-signed, most recently-dated Privacy Notice Statement for non-Canadian participants

Candidate's letter of intent, no longer than one page:

  • Describes the type of study or studies that will be done
  • explains why one chose to study in Canada, the institution, program, and supervisor they chose, as well as how the suggested course of study or line of research will affect their future career.

Letter from the home institution attesting to full-time enrollment (maximum one page):

  • Using a formal letterhead
  • dated no more than six months ago
  • demonstrates the candidate's present enrollment in a full-time course
  • It is not appropriate to submit copies of transcripts, a student ID, or an admissions letter.

Supporting letter from the home institution, no longer than one page:

  • Using a formal letterhead

  • outlines the type of research or study to be done in Canada and how the applicant's home institution and the scholarship program would both benefit.

Only graduate students; maximum one-page letter of invitation from the Canadian supervisor

  • using a formal letterhead
  • dated no more than six months ago
  • the Canadian supervisor's signature
  • indicates the type and extent of the research partnership with the student's home university.
  • shows how the exchange will benefit the Canadian institution, the supervisor, and the peers

Copy of the agreement or memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the partner institution that has been signed:

  • shows that there will be no tuition charges and emphasizes this particular provision
  • A letter from the international office or its equivalent on official letterhead that links the application to a particular international research collaboration, 
  • identifies the Canadian supervisor, and states that tuition won't be charged can be included with college and undergraduate research applications without an existing agreement. 
  • The letter should be no longer than six months old and no longer than one page.
  • Expiring agreements won't be accepted, thus institutions must attach a statement stating that the agreement is being renewed if one is currently in the works.
  • For graduate applications, a contract is suggested but not necessary.
By the end of March 22, 2022, a ranking of applications based on the organization's strategic priorities must be given to scholarships-bourses@cbie.ca.

The deadline for institutions in Canada

On behalf of candidates, Canadian universities have until 11:59 p.m. to submit online applications. 22 March 2022, EDT.

Notification

  • Following clearance from the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development, the scholarship administrator will notify Canadian schools of the final choice and outcomes in May 2022. (DFATD).
