AIHF Scholarship Applications for 2022–2023: Requirements & Eligibility

The American Industrial Hygiene Foundation (AIHF) has given more than 855 scholarships worth close to $2.2 million to students who are serious about studying industrial hygiene and/or occupational and environmental health safety over the past 30 years. On the strength of this achievement, the AIHF Board of Trustees is happy to inform that scholarship applications for the academic year 2022–2023 are now being accepted until February 6, 2023.

AIHF Scholarships Requirements For Eligibility

Application is open to all full-time and part-time students who will be enrolled in one of the following programs at the beginning of the Fall 2023 semester:

  • A graduate or undergraduate degree program that has received full ABET accreditation under the Environmental, Health and Safety Program Criteria or the Industrial Hygiene or Similarly Named Program Criteria.
  • a graduate public health program with a concentration in environmental health and a focus on industrial hygiene or occupational health, fully recognized by the CEPH.
  • An Industrial Hygiene program or one with a similar name that is provided at an NIOSH ERC or through an NIOSH Training Project Grant.
  • At one of the following Canadian universities: McGill University, University of British Columbia, University of Montreal, University of Quebec at Trois-Rivieres, or University of Toronto. An industrial hygiene program, or one with a similar name.
  • New York University's M.S. program in Occupational and Environmental Hygiene (NYU). For the Dr. Morton Lippmann Scholarship, only NYU students are eligible.

The AIHF Scholarship is open to students who are not enrolled in any of the programs mentioned above. To be eligible for an AIHF scholarship, a program or group of students must first submit a separate application form that is filled out by a school administration. The school application form must be submitted by January 4, 2023.

Additional Scholarship Application Information

Applicants will be required to submit or send the documents required below when completing the AIHF scholarship application. Please be sure to include the following six essential components in your application submission. PDF files must be used to submit all requested materials. College transcripts

  • Send in all undergraduate transcripts as well as, if applicable, graduate and doctorate program transcripts. In the absence of transcripts, candidates may submit an unofficial grade report that has been approved by the department chair.
  • Professional/Personal Statement (no more than 2 pages)

Make certain that your remark touches on the following points:

  • Why do you want to pursue a career in industrial hygiene?
  • What area of IH particularly interests you?

Describe any professional activities you have or have had in industrial hygiene.

What are your long-term professional objectives? Become a CIH, do research, etc.

Why are you the most deserving recipient of a scholarship?

Optional:

  • If you'd like to be considered for the President's Leadership Award,
  • In your personal or professional statement, be careful to mention how you have demonstrated your knowledge of industrial hygiene, environmental health, and occupational health disciplines.
  • In your personal or professional statement, be sure to mention the following if you're interested in being considered for the Debbie Dietrich Women in Industrial Hygiene Scholarship:

    • How you've shown leadership abilities that have positively affected or elevated women in your field of study, community, or place of employment.
    • Final-year Project or Thesis
  • Description/Internship
  • Every Applicant: Give a brief but thorough one-paragraph summary of your research thesis or project, capstone project, or internship project. Include:

    • A theory you have (i.e., what is the question you want to answer),
    • its applicability to industrial hygiene and the basis for its choice,
    • how you're approaching the project or would approach it,
    • If you have the chance, list your results or conclusions.
    • Choose a topic related to industrial hygiene that you are interested in researching or that you believe needs to be researched and follow the instructions in the preceding paragraph if you have NOT yet chosen your research thesis, project, capstone, or internship project or if your program does not require one (points 1 through 3 only).
    • current curriculum vitae (no more than 2 pages)
    • A list of all employment and internship experiences should also be included.
  • Please make sure to include EVERYONE of the following as well:

    • Awards, recognition, and other scholarships received
    • Activities outside of the classroom and in the community that involve volunteering
    • Volunteer and take part in groups that promote industrial hygiene, public health, and safety, like local student sections.
    • A professional image that is digitally high-resolution (minimum 300 dpi)
    • Your picture won't be given to the committee that chooses scholarship recipients, the AIHF Scholarship Advisory Committee. If awarded an AIHF scholarship, it will be utilized at AIHF/discretion AIHA's in publications, marketing campaigns, and material and gift requests.
    • It is ESSENTIAL to provide two letters of recommendation from experts.
    • One must originate from an academic program professor. The second one must come from a CIH or IH expert (your professor can meet this criterion). If the same person can fit into each of these categories, a second professional reference is still necessary.
  • To let your references know what to expect, send them the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/JDNV2J8. Your references can submit their letters of recommendation online at the following website or by sending them directly to aihf@aiha.org through email.
  • The student's references cannot submit letters of recommendation.
  • Reference letters must be written on letterhead, be two pages in length, and be accurate. Make sure to let your references know how crucial a decision-maker their letter of recommendation is.
  • Make sure to request that your references speak to the following issues:

    • How long have you known the candidate, and what makes them stand out from their contemporaries?
    • What qualities or abilities best describe the applicant?
    • How would you rate the applicant's interest and passion for industrial hygiene?
    • How would you rate the applicant's essential industrial hygiene abilities, if any?

Please share any extra information you believe the scholarship committee may need to make a decision about the candidate (interpersonal skills, demonstrated leadership skills, academic performance, work ethics, etc.).

AIHF Scholarships 2023: Deadline For Submissions

The entire AIHF application package must be submitted by Friday, February 6, 2023. You must fully complete all assignments and provide accurate responses. All available scholarships will be given consideration to those who submit a complete application.

AIHF Selection And Review Process

The independent review procedure for the AIHF Scholarship Advisory Committee will start in February 2023. The committee's choice will be communicated to all candidates by the middle of April. All scholarships will be awarded in the fall of 2023, and the grantees will all be publically honored at the AIHce EXP 2023, which takes place May 22–24 in Phoenix, Arizona.
